Dimensions of Art

    *Thanks* for the presentation John Henry Twachtman was a member of the "Ten" along with George Inness. One of his techniques was to paint the top of the warp and weft of the canvas giving a pixelated image floating in front of the painting.* Can still remember a winter scene of his at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last century. Beautiful yet disorienting at first. Whelter Twachtman primed the canvas don't know. * for what's it worth "saw" a *mirage* of a large Matisse wall sized painting between the physical work and me. The mirage image was the painting. Focal point distance, color field, lighting, don't know ? Made me wonder if some painters are aware of this effect. (A cheap effect is fluorescent paint under ultraviolet light separating into three separate levels, RGB)

    Another beautiful art history video, Jill thank you very much. It made up some memory. Peter Paul Rubens was the first popular European artist whose real works I had seen in the museum in 2017. It was so massive in size and jaw dropping beauty of them, paintings made me both demotivated and motivated at the same time as an aspiring artist. I travelled 400 kms just to see them and I never regret the decision, as after watching them I started to see art differently , then I used to before. Also I didn't know many artists, who I didn't know as they are still not very popular to the general public but after Rubens I dug some and I'm still grateful for this small but impactful event of watching Rubens in the museum. Without that exhibit, I might have given up practicing art.

    *Thanks* for the fine three part series on the oil painters presented and their techniques. The loose brush strokes of William Bouguereau opened the door for me to his work. J.S. Sargent also set up his canvas parallel to the sitter then stepped back comparing the equal value and size of both the subject and painting. Assume paintings have a focal point or distance for optimal veiwing. The excellent and extensive watercolor web blog *Handprint* has a good article on Sargent.

    • @vincentgoupil180
      @vincentgoupil180 10 дней назад

      Jan van Eyck ( before 1390 - *1441* ) Albrecht Durer ( *1471* - 1528 ) If the painting is van Eyck then Durer imagined what he looked like, i.e. van Eyck's painting of "Man in a Red Turban" (?). Durer did admire van Eyck so it could be a tribute to him. AD has various meanings, anno domini, towards, derived, as ... (see any dictionary, Wiktionary). The latter "as" may be a variation of van Eyck's pun "als ich kan", "as I (Eyck) can". It's a stretch, I know. Was AD written similiar to Durer's monogram of his initials with serifs, the upper case D underneath the A ?

      That could be a very interesting topic, actually. Sometimes the frames are selected by museum professionals, but other times they are the originals. In medieval times the frame was often literally an extension of the painting surface. I'll add the topic to my list of video ideas.

    Do great artist need to study composition? Or is it inherently within them? When I've looked at cave paintings ( online ) they appear to be ( some at least ) composed. It puzzles me that before the rules, even perhaps before language some people " have it ". The theory being that enabling the subconscious might have been the key. Was the primitive mind able to do that more easily?

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt 29 дней назад

      Very interesting. It does seem that some people may take to composition more easily, but I would suggest that anyone can improve their skill no matter the natural talent. If primitive humans came to it more naturally is it because their lives were so much simpler? Hmm.

That said, some of the best classical artworks throughout history have been done in watercolour!
